How your staycation can help local businesses

Lets face it, 2020 has been a disaster of a year for just about everyone but especially local businesses. Even now in August many of the pubs are still closed and the Cinemas and nightclubs may not open for another few months. With winter coming there is a feeling of anxiety amongst many people in Ireland as our winter months are tough enough as things were. With a short days, rain, wind and ever present clouds winter can get quite depressing here and it is also quite long. Realistically our winter is from October – late March on a good year so yeah that is almost half of the year!

Midwest Radio - New 'staycation subsidy' being developed for Irish ...

During lockdown in Spring and Summer at least people could get out for hikes or go to your local park and beach. If lockdown comes back in during winter there won’t be a whole lot to do. Also it is not like there are any movies or TV series being recorded so we will literally be stuck in doors watching reruns of old TV shows…depressing!

But lets try to stay positive. The goods news is that the summer was half salvaged as many people have done staycations. Kerry, Cork and Mayo seemed to be the hot spots this year (like most) and when the weather is good it is a great country to have a holiday in.

Local businesses that are struggling really needed that injection of cash flow. Online businesses have not suffered as much however stock levels seem to be low across the board as shipments were not being made in the summer. Websites like hosuetech.ie who sell office and gaming chairs have reported that they are out of almost all stock for at least another month which shows that online businesses didn’t even escape the wrath of lockdown.

So if you are planning on getting away this Autumn do your best to holiday in Ireland. We here on the Aran islands really appreciate your business and it will keep us going through winter.

Has Coronavirus Closed your gym

With all gyms closed due to the Corona virus and now the 2km rule for exercise it doesn’t leave a whole lot of options when it comes to staying fit and healthy. Of course the publics health must come first but also a lot of people are finding it difficult already to stay in doors, especially as the weather improves coming into the middle of April.

We are only in week 4 now of lock down and the novelty has well and truly worn off. With the 2km rule in place we can now only exercise within 2kms of our home. This does not leave much option for cyclist enthusiasts and many cyclists have reportedly being stopped by Gardai and told to return home.

Bikehut Turbo Trainer | Halfords IE

So where does this leave us? Well not with a whole lot of options. In terms of staying in good cycling shape you can get an exercises bike or one of the turbo trainers which can be used with your bike. This works by dismounting the wheel and placing it on the turbo trainer. You then cycle as normal. This is as close as you can get to the real thing in your home. According to mestech.ie they only cost €299.00 which may sound like a bit much but if this lockdown is here for the long term it could be a very worth investment.

Of course there are other options like a spin bike if you don’t want to or know how to remove the wheel from your bike. Other than that you are really limited to the 2km area around your house which is nothing when it comes to cycling.

Maybe in the future they were extend this rule to 10kms or more if things go well but things are changing by the day. As we get into the warmer months many cyclists will be chomping at the bit to get out and about and many cycling tours have been cancelled.

Electric Scooters Promise Big Things This Christmas

You may have noticed people commuting around on these crazy looking things and wondered what they were. At first it was only the odd person here and there but now it seems there are hundreds if not thousands of people going around on electric scooters each day. Why are they popping up everywhere all of a sudden? Or more accurately why are people all of a sudden so big into electric scooters when a couple of years ago they were nowhere to be seen.

Contrary to popular believe these electric scooters have been around for quite some time but a few things were holding them back. One of these things was how they looked. The first models of electric scooters were not pretty and they were quite big and bulky. This brings us to the other reason they were not so popular from the start and this is the price. Electric scooters were starting at over €1,000 just a few years ago but now you can get something like the Xiaomi M365 from escooterireland for just €449. That is a huge difference in price so it is easy to see how big they have gotten.

What is strange is that they were really being pushed by Chinese companies rather than Western companies and they were not doing huge advertising campaigns. In a way they did almost come out of nowhere considering there was no big companies pushing them hard other than the rental scooter companies but that is almost a different market. In this case they are being rented for short trips rather than being sold to a consumer.

The price of electric batteries coming down is a huge reason why they are more affordable now. The same of course can be said for the electric car and it is what was holding back the move to electric vehicles as a whole for quite some time. Now that the batteries are more affordable the rest of the electric scooter is not that expensive to make. So this is a big reason why they are popping up…some think they’re cool..others don’t. Make up your own mind :).
