Electric scooters for adults have become widespread amongst cities from all over Europe apart from one major European city…London! Unfortunately for a lot of commuters adult electric scooters are still technically illegal on the UK streets. Electric scooters have become a popular mode of comuting among many working professionals in European cities but the UK is still slow to legalize such scooters.
It seems rather than embracing this new eco friendly way of commuting the UK police are out to make a statement and are actively going after escooter riders in London city. Despite more urgent and dangerous crimes such as knife crime and robbery which is on the rise in London it is surprising that the Police are focused on such a small issue in the grand scheme of things.
With climate change such a big isue these days it is surprising that the UK government are not doing everything they can to get people onto electric scooters for adults. Not only are they environmentally friendly but they can also save commuters a lot of money over the course of a year.
Electric scooter start ups such as Bolt are pushing for the legalization of electric scooters and are actively meeting the UK minister for transport on such issues. Until then riders continue to use electric scooters despite the UK law as many see it as ridiculous. The police do tend to turn a blind eye once the rider is doing nothing too ridiculous such as breakign the speed limit or riding dangerously. That said it is still a bit of a risk to ride these electric scooters on the roads. Eventually the government will have to bow to pressure and somehow bring a new law into govern such scooters. Until then it is ride at your own risk.
